Netflix’s ‘Blonde’ shows Marilyn Monroe as victim (and little else)

The greatest Hollywood star in film history, the archetype of the phrase “sex symbol” and dead all too young: We are not done yet telling the tragic story of Marilyn Monroe, it seems. The life of the star (1926-1962) is now being retold in an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel “Blonde”. Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas stars in the Netflix production from director Andrew Dominik, available to stream from September 28. There is little new to be told about Monroe’s story, it would appear. Instead, the Australian director wants to show why Monroe was ultimately a victim throughout her career. …
